Style council: July interiors by Sonia Murton

Interiors guru Sonia Murton commemorates Blighty with stylish patriotic prints

While I am the first to admit I’m no football fanatic by a long way, and World Cup memorabilia is a definite no-no in my home, there is something about the event that inspires huge patriotism. So I’ll be showing my support with some vintage-esque inspired finds scattered about my abode.

For an original, hand-embroidered design look no further than Jan Constantine, who incorporates the union jack Britannia flag into all sorts of accessories, from tea cups to tea cosies, with a quirky mismatched feel. The Love Rug (£312, pictured below) can be used on the floor or as a wall hanging, and I adore all the cushions.

Guaranteed to keep your beverages cooler than cool this summer is the 50s-style Smeg fridge (bottom right), adorned with the St George’s cross. John Lewis offers it with two years’ guarantee for £1,179. The Keep Calm and Carry On deckchair (£135 from Pedlars, below left) is sure to take centre stage in the garden – the name says it all!

Fly the flag with personalised bunting from The Letteroom (from £3.50) and visit Emma Bridgewater’s website for some appropriately patriotic trinkets from butter dishes to biscuit tins.

If you want to really go to town, hop online to www.wallpaperdirect.co.uk; the Union Jack Vivienne Westwood Collection by Cole and Son (£118 a roll), and Birds of Feather from Albany (£28 a roll), which includes robins and sparrows with Union Jack highlights for a contemporary edge you can’t beat.
