Let’s do lunch
By Victoria Purcell on December 7th 2009
Traditions far too often fall by the wayside in the constant race to evolve, improve and modernise, so it is always refreshing when somebody goes out of the way to rescue them. One particular tradition that I’m sure most would like to see salvaged is lunch, far too often spent hunched over our desk with a sandwich.
Thankfully, one local organisation has been inviting local people to lunch for 33 years. The Blackheath Luncheon Club provides businessmen and women from in and around the area with the opportunity to get together once a month to enjoy a good spread, a glass of wine and a spot of informal networking. The club celebrated its anniversary at The Clarendon Hotel on 21 October with a delicious spread and a birthday cake.
Roy Fairbairn, the club president has been involved with the organisation from the beginning, and continues to steer the gathering in the right direction alongside Mary Chandler, Graham Dodd and a team of community-minded helpers.
Conceived over drinks at the Crown on Tranquil Vale back in 1976, the idea has now become a regular fixture in the calendar of many, with the biggest events in the calendar being the summer barbeque and the Christmas party (which takes place this year on 16 December).
“It’s the members that make it,” said Roy. “Without the loyal support of regular attendees there would be no club.”
